MPD: Car thieves targeting Hondas – FOX10 News | WALA
Mobile Police say an uptick in stolen cars over the past month has gotten their attention. The bandits seem to be targeting a specific type of car using a blank key. Investigators have made an arrest, but we’re told there could be more.
According to an email sent to Providence Hospital employees, there have been two dozen stolen in the area since the beginning of June, and that the “car theft ring” is targeting older model Hondas. MPD couldn’t give specific numbers about the thefts, but says there has been a “substantial uptick” in stolen Hondas. The email mentioned a car being stolen from the visitors parking lot of the hospital on Monday.
That car was Kathy Booth’s one thousand nine hundred ninety three Honda Accord, which fits the description of the cars MPD says thieves are targeting.
An already strained excursion to the emergency room Monday. ended even worse for Kathy Booth. After being treated at Providence Hospital. she walks out to the parking lot. and can’t find her car.
“I kinda looked around bumfuzzled, and then I realized, hey my car is gone. I come out and say, why my car, not that I wish it on anyone else’s car but why my car, why an older car,” says Booth.
Shocked, she says, because her car is a an old Honda Accord. She had just spent hundreds of dollars on repairs. The next day, Booth says investigators found it abandoned in Semmes, stripped; the brand fresh battery, radio, and belongings in the car, gone.
“They took car seats for my grandson and my granddaughter she is upset because she had made me some bracelets that I dangled from my mirror.”
Police arrested Christopher Platt for allegedly stealing the car the same day it was found. He has numerous theft and receiving stolen property charges from that same day.
According to Assistant Police Chief Clay Godwin, investigators are noticing a spike in stolen 90’s model Hondas, just like Booth’s car.
And to make it worse, we’re told the thieves are using a blank key to do it, so it’s hard to point them out. That’s why Booth thinks no one in the hospital parking lot noticed someone taking her car.
“When you know you parked something somewhere. and you come out and it’s not there, it’s very shocking.”
Booth says investigators told her that there have been other Hondas like hers stolen recently, and that the thieves seem to be using a key.
We found a similar case in another state. A post from the Billings, Montana Police Department says that since April, twenty six Hondas have been stolen using a bump key, which is a key shaven down to fit those specific cars. Authorities there have made arrests.
