Suspect arrested in connection with crash that killed Four, theft o – KCTV5

UPDATE: According to the Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief, a suspect has been arrested in connection with this story.

Officer arrested suspect in reference to fatality accident @ 63rd & Roland – four people died & good samaritan’s car was taken.

Four people have died in connection with a crash that happened on Sunday where a truck ran into a tree, and the woman who stopped to help then had her truck stolen by one of the crash victims.

Just before one a.m., officers went to the six thousand three hundred block of Rowland Avenue on a call about a car crash.

When they arrived, they found a green Toyota truck that had hit a tree.

Their investigation exposed that the Toyota truck was stolen and that it was headed southbound on N. 63rd Street when it hit the tree.

Two people inwards the truck were dead when officers arrived. Two other people in the truck were critically injured and were ultimately taken to a local hospital where one died from his injuries the same day.

Police identified the two people who had died in the truck as Hayden Gottman, 20, of Lenexa, KS, and Joshua Lindsey, Eighteen, of Overland Park, KS.

The person who died at the hospital the same day was later identified as Cameron Shafer, 20, of Kansas City, KS.

A fourth passenger died several days later on Thursday, July thirteen due to his injuries. He has been identified as 18-year-old Cory J. Thornburgh from Shawnee, KS.

There were at least five people in the truck.

Chane`l Hunt heard the crash around 12:50 in the morning. «I heard the tires screeching followed by a noisy boom,» she said.

She looked outside and eyed the truck and, while she was calling 911, she witnessed a woman pull over to attempt to help.

Then, one of the fellows from the crash stole that woman’s truck.

KCTV5 News spoke with that woman about what happened. She asked us not to identify her.

«His face was covered in blood,» she said. «He got up out the truck and he came up the hill.»

«We kind of locked eyes and I could tell that he was looking toward my car because I left my truck door open.»

She said he staggered toward her vehicle and she pleaded with him not to take it.

«He attempted to get me to get in the truck with him and I said, ‘No, I can’t go with you.`»

When KCTV5 asked if she was startled, she replied, “Horrified, but at the same time, just wanting to help.»

“I think he just wished help,» she said. «I think he was afraid.”

After what happened, most people might think twice before stopping to help someone in need. But not this woman. «I’d do it all over again,» she said.

The good Samaritan said police have found her truck.

A memorial has been created in the place where the crash happened.

People on the street are glad that police have arrested the suspect. They have been on edge all week.

“He is worth to go to jail,” Daniel Gibson said. “What astonished me was when the lady got blood on her arm and the stud just literally drove of.”
