Ten fresh cars launched at Geneva two thousand seventeen that you can afford, This is Money

Leave behind the flash supercars. Ten of the best fresh models launched at the Geneva Motor Showcase that you could buy this year

Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren – all these exotic carmakers released fresh production or concept models at this year’s Geneva Motor Showcase.

But what are the chances of us ever possessing one? Slender, right?

So step away from the drool left by onlookers gawping at these ultra-expensive supercars and saunter across to this selection of more reasonably priced vehicles.

We’ve selected ten of the best fresh models that are going to be in dealerships in the UK very soon, from £10,000 family-sized estates to lightweight two-seat sports cars.

1. Volvo XC60

If you know the original XC60 you might think this second-generation car looks almost identical. Volvo says not, claiming you’ll be able to tell the difference inbetween the two when you’re in the showroom (which is most likely a tactic to get you to visit a dealership in the very first place).

It’s a scaled-down five-seat version of the seven-seat XC90, sharing a trimmed down version of the same platform and slew of styling cues with the thicker sibling.

Production embarks in Volvo’s home nation of Sweden next month, with UK orders expected to arrive in the summer. Prices will kick off from around £35,000.

Two. Seat Ibiza

This isn’t just a hugely significant car to Seat, it’s a massive deal for the VW Group that wields it. That’s because it’s the very first model under the VW banner to feature the latest MQB A0 platform – the same one that will underpin the likes of the VW Polo, Skoda Fabia and Audi A1 in coming years.

This platform will be used across the VW Group’s entire small-car range, including dinky SUVs. Seat has promised it will mean more interior and boot space than the outgoing supermini.

Prices are expected to commence from £13,000, just undercutting the fresh Ford Fiesta.

Trio. Alpine A110

We featured the very first photos of this ‘fresh’ Alpine a duo of weeks ahead of the Geneva Motor Showcase, but now we know more about it we thought it was worth revisiting.

So what have we learned that’s fresh? Well, it will have a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine sat in the middle of the chassis that produces 249bhp and up to 320Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and will result in a zero to 62mph time of Four.Five seconds.

It will cost from £50,000 – that’s £10,000 more than a basic Porsche seven hundred eighteen Cayman. That could be a problem.

HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP

Four. Nissan Qashqai

Okay, we lied to you – this isn’t a fresh car, but it is a facelift with some significant fresh features. It’s also the best-selling SUV in the UK.

Oh, and it’s also the car that has cemented Nissan’s production future in the UK for the time being. Have we coaxed you to keep reading?

So what’s the big development news, other than the stockier looks? Well, it will be available with ProPILOT – Nissan’s semi-autonomous driving tech. That means the updated Qashqai will be able to steer, accelerate and brake itself in a single lane of a motorway. Stir over Tesla (which can also do this if AutoPilot mode is working).

You can order one from July with the cheapest beginning from approximately £19,000.

Five. Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Do you like swift cars but need something with lots of space for kids, peak trips, pet cages and all the other baggage that comes with family life?

Do you have £73,000 idling in your bank account? If the response is yes, yes, yes then this is the car for you.

It’s Porsche’s estate version of the Panamera, called the Sport Turismo – cool, we know. Prices range all the way up to £117,000 for the Four.0-litre V8 Turbo petrol with – wait for it – 542bhp. It is officially one of the fastest school-run cars on the planet.

It also has a five hundred twenty litre boot lightly big enough for a fortnight’s worth of groceries – just in case your playmate asks why you’ve just spent all that money on the fresh Porsche parked on the driveway.

SPECIAL MENTIONS FOR.

Volkswagen Arteon

This is VW’s replacement for the CC five-door saloon, called the Arteon.

It debuts a fresh design language that future VW models will adopt.

Commencing from around £30,000, it offers buyers the chance to have a family car that trickles style.

Honda Civic Type R

This is the latest hot-hatch suggesting from Honda that will be built at the Swindon plant in the UK.

It boasts 320hp and a 170mph top speed from a revised and tuned Two.0-litre turbo motor.

It will also cost £30,000.

*The Range Rover Velar would have won a place in our list but was technically launched a week ahead of the demonstrate – sorry Land Rover.

6. Suzuki Swift

Back to reality, how about a historically super reliable puny car from Suzuki? It’s the latest generation Swift, which goes on sale in the UK in June from around £9,000.

It uses the same platform as the recently released Baleno – Suzuki’s family hatchback suggesting – which premiered the Japanese brand’s lightweight chassis construction. It means the Swift tips the scales at a featherweight 890kg. Combined with a stiffer set-up it should be better treating and more frugal on fuel.

It’s not a bad little looker either – the floating roofline and hidden rear door treats take the brand into previously unknown stylish territory.

7. Audi RS5

Some cars are all about the figures. The fresh two thousand seventeen RS5 is one of them.

Audi has been promising extra power from the sleek coupe, but claims to have delivered better fuel efficiency, too. Not that you care too much about this if you’re buying an RS5 in the very first place.

So what’s it putting out? The fresh Two.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine produces a massive 444bhp and 600Nm of torque – that matches the power of the outgoing – and much loved – V8 but ramps pulling power up by 170Nm.

That means this £63,000 sport saloon – available in June – has a zero to 62mph time of Trio.9 seconds and, with the limiter liquidated, a top speed of 174mph.

8. Dacia Logan MCW Stepway

From the rapid to the not so rapid. This is the latest arrival from Romanian brand Dacia, which is wielded by French carmaker Renault. It’s called the Logan MCV Stepway. It’s practical and it’s cheap.

Stepway is the term used by the manufacturer for jacked-up versions of existing models – see the Dacia Sandero Stepway, which represents sixty per cent of all Sandero sales. That means this is a 50mm higher iteration of the current Logan estate car, suggesting a bounty of space with a more superior view of the road ahead.

The Stepway switches should add £1,000 to the Logan’s standard asking price. That means it will cost around £10,000. That’s a lot of brand fresh car for not so much money.

9. BMW five Series Touring

It’s the moment sales reps have been waiting for – the fresh two thousand seventeen BMW five Series Touring estate. So what are the significant nuggets of information you need to know?

Very first off, you’ll need a fairly big parking space, as it measures in at Four,940mm long – that’s 36mm longer than the outgoing model. That said it is the same length as the five Series saloon – oddly – however the booted model has forty litres of extra luggage space with five hundred seventy litres in total. The only problem is that’s a entire seventy litres bashful of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class boot. Oh dear.

The good news is that the fresh five Series saloon has won rave reviews, expect the estate to be doing the same thing soon too.

Prices embark from £38,385, which is a £2,300 premium on the saloon.

Ten. DS7 Crossback

The luxury SUV is taking over the market – every brand is upping its game (fairly literally) and adding fresh jacked-up models to their ranges.

DS Automobiles is the latest to do so, with this fresh DS7 Crossback.

This is Citroen’s luxury brand’s very first attempt at a big SUV, and it looks the part – perhaps a little similar to the Volve XC60 at the top of the page.

It’s also got a few tricks up its arches, with a plug-in powertrain, tailored suspension and some semi-autonomous driving functions.

So how much is it? Prices will commence from around £28,000, but you will have to wait until January next year to get your mitts on one. Is it worth the financial saving over an Audi Q5 or Range Rover Evoque?
