A Calgary cyclist said he was railing his bike in the city’s southwest when a car pulled up in front of him and slammed on the brakes.

Nigel Brockton has a camera mounted on the back of his bicycle, which captured him flying off of his bike and tumbling into the road—though not what caused the crash.

“You can see, as my bike is spinning upside down in the air, you can see how close he is to the parked cars as he pulls right in front of me.”

He said it happened just after Five:40 p.m. on June eight at twenty six Avenue and twenty one Street S.W.

“I’ve violated my collarbone in five or six chunks; I had plates put in on Monday,” Brockton said.

“I’ve cracked my arm by the elbow, smashed my helmet, road rash…”

Brockton felt he could have been killed in the incident.

“If I had reacted a fraction of a 2nd later, my kids very likely wouldn’t have a dad.”

He says the driver of the vehicle left the scene and he’s filed a report to police.

“I think an enhancing number of people are railing with cameras on their bikes,” Brockton said. “Drivers need to know they will be accountable for their deeds and police need to take it gravely, because [these incidents] are life-threatening.”

Calgary police said they are investigating the situation as a careless driving incident.

A spokesperson said motor vehicle collisions involving cyclists enhanced sharply in two thousand fifteen (up thirty per cent) as compared to 2014. CPS said that marks the highest number of collisions of any year over the past ten years, “which may be explained, in part, by an overall increase in bicyclist ridership.”

CPS said bicyclist collisions decreased slightly in 2016, down by three per cent. There have been no fatal bicycle collisions in Calgary since 2012, according to police.
