A police officer has been filmed reaching speeds of up to two hundred twenty kilometres an hour, in a bid to catch a motorist on the mid north coast. The driver’s crime? He was travelling in the right forearm lane on the Pacific Highway.

A jury has heard claims a man, accused of murdering his father, had him killed, because he desired to get his palms on millions of dollars in life insurance. Lismore Supreme Court heard allegations today that Michael Phillip Martin is a trained martial arts fighter, and his dad was killed with a samurai sword.

RFS KEEPING CLOSE EYE ON FIRES

The RFS is monitoring dozens of bushfires across the Mid North Coast. A large blaze has burned through more than one thousand four hundred hectares of coastal swamp at Clybucca, north-east of Kempsey, with fears it could menace homes. While further south, an out-of-control fire sent smoke into the sky next to the Pacific Highway at Cooperabung. Close to thirty fires are presently searing inbetween Forster and Grafton.

SOUTH STREET EXTENSION Starts

Work has begun on the long-awaited extension of Kempsey’s South Street. Costing $3-million, the upgrade will see large trucks diverted away from residential areas.

$138,000 GRANT FOR YARRAWARRA CULTURAL CENTRE

The Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Crimson Rock, north of Coffs Harbour, is in for a revamp. The centre has been granted $138,000 by the state government to carry out a refurbishment of its premises. The grant will permit an upgrade of the art gallery, museum and conference centre, which plays a major role in the preservation and exhibition of local Indigenous culture. Local MP, Andrew Fraser, says the project will benefit the community by making it lighter for people to access Aboriginal arts and culture.

The warm and sunny weather on the north coast today created ideal conditions for the thousands of people who went outdoors to feast Father’s Day. At Urunga the riverside park was packed with people who also turned out to view an exhibition of sculptures.
