A 17-year-old boy pointed a gun at a Dolton police officer and was fatally shot after the officer pursued him and another man to the Bishop Ford Freeway following a carjacking in Hazel Crest, police said.

The shooting took place near 130th Street on Interstate ninety four just before Two:20 p.m., according to a news release from state police. The teenage, Darreon J. Neal, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was pronounced dead at Five:59 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Neal died from a gunshot wound to the back, the office determined following an autopsy Wednesday.

A vehicle — shown in photos from the scene to be a Lexus SUV — was reported stolen in a carjacking by two armed suspects in Hazel Crest, and Hazel Crest police broadcast information about the robbery over a state police radio band, according to Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins Jr.

A Dolton officer heard the broadcast and spotted the stolen vehicle near Sibley Boulevard and Greenwood Avenue and got behind them, he said.

The driver of the SUV appeared to notice the officer following in a squad car and “took off” at high speed, getting on Interstate ninety four heading north from Sibley — which is at fifteen thousand South, Collins said.

Near 130th Street, the SUV collided with a semi truck, causing front-end harm and stopping the vehicle. The two people in the SUV got out, and the 17-year-old took out a gun and the officer fired at him, hitting the boy, Collins said.

The other man “darted” into nearby weeds, and was found about an hour later, about three hundred yards from the scene of the crash.

Two guns were found at the scene and taken into evidence. Hazel Crest police were able to confirm that the SUV the Dolton officer chased and that crashed on the Bishop Ford was the one stolen in the carjacking, Collins said.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force was investigating the police shooting, according to Collins and State Police Master Sgt. Don Orseno.

Lanes were closed on the expressway near 130th Street because of the crime scene, according to state police.

At the scene before dark, several police surrounded the SUV believed to be involved in the incident, a gold Lexus SUV. About twenty police officers walked along the highway examining the area.
